ASDAN

Mountain Movers are thrilled to offer ASDAN Short Courses again!

These wonderfully inclusive and highly recognised courses will be available to all UK – based home educators at not for profit pricing. Every penny goes back into supporting the home education community and making this a self-sustaining service.

Who are ASDAN?

ASDAN is an education charity and awarding organisation providing courses, accredited curriculum programmes and regulated qualifications to engage, elevate and empower young people aged 11 to 25 years, including those with additional needs or disabilities, or who are not engaging/succeeding in their education.

Our goal is to engage them through relevant and motivating courses to achieve meaningful learning outcomes.

We believe that young people should have the opportunity to discover, develop and make use of their abilities to affirm their identities, contribute to society, and challenge educational and social inequalities.

How do the courses run?

As fellow home educators, we recognise and acknowledge that you –  as your child’s parent are best placed to support your child in developing their skills and ASDAN courses are all about skill development.

All ASDAN Short Courses are available online via the ASDAN e-portfolio system. This online platform allows learners to complete their chosen Short Courses online by completing challenges, recording skills development and uploading evidence.

Mountain Movers can then log in to assign challenges, view learner progress and assess portfolios.

ASDAN Short Courses are flexible, portfolio-based programmes designed to accredit skills development across a range of topics and curriculum areas.

Because they are multi-level, the focus is on completing challenges and skills development according to individual ability, rather than attainment at a specific level.

Skills development....

Ability to learn – how you manage your personal learning and development. It is about planning and working towards targets to improve your performance and reviewing your progress

Teamwork – how you work with others when planning and carrying
out activities to get things done and achieving shared objectives. This will
involve working with a group of people.

Problem solving  – your ability to recognise problems and doing something about them. It is about using different methods to find a solution and checking to see if they work.

IT skills  – being able to make the best use of computers and other
items such as printers, scanners and digital cameras.

Literacy – how you talk to people, the ways you find out information
and let other people know about your views and opinions. It also includes
all aspects of writing and reading.

Numeracy  – your ability to use numbers. If, for example, you’ve measured or calculated something you will have used numeracy skills

In addition to the six core skills above, some Short Courses also include course skills that are related to the subject of the Short Course.

What's involved?

Choose Challenges.

Look through the challenges  and choose which modules, sections
and challenges you would like to do.  Each section should take you at least 10 hours to complete.

Complete Evidence.

Carry out your chosen challenge,  collecting evidence as you do it. Upload it to your e-portfolio. Evidence can be in a variety of different formats, from photos, videos, witness statements, diary, presentations, letters, emails, diagrams, notes, charts, surveys and research.

Record your skills / complete Skill Sheets.

Complete the skills tick boxes to show the skills you have used during the challenge (The number and type of skills sheets required depends on the length of the Short Course you are working towards).

At the end of your Short Course, use these documents to review your experience.

• The summary of achievement allows you to highlight your skills development. You
should describe at least one example of a challenge where you have shown each skill.

• The personal statement allows you and your tutor to reflect on what you have gained
as a result of completing the Short Course and your plans for the future.
